Every child loves to be recognized. As a principal, I know appreciation has the power to transform student motivation. Yet in my school, the system of appreciation often fails.

We give certificates for attendance, prizes for exams, or an occasional “Best Student” award. But recognition is inconsistent, biased at times, and quickly forgotten. Instead of motivating all students, it often leaves many feeling left out.

Why This Happens

  • Manual process: Teachers have to remember who deserves recognition, so many get missed.
  • Inconsistent criteria: One teacher appreciates handwriting, another only marks.
  • Event-driven recognition: Awards happen only during annual functions or PTMs.
  • Bias & subjectivity: Some students are repeatedly rewarded, others never.

As a result, the appreciation system in my school becomes symbolic, not systematic.

What Schools Usually Try (But Doesn’t Work)

  • Certificates & trophies: Given occasionally, not linked to everyday effort.
  • Star charts & wall boards: Exciting for a week, then forgotten.
  • Public announcements: Inspire some, embarrass others.
  • One-time rewards: Fail to build consistent motivation.

These efforts are temporary and fail to make appreciation part of the school culture.
